On April 1, 2016, the Black-Eyed Press LLC celebrated its fifth anniversary. Created to be a space where printmakers and book artists could create a community while creating art, the Press has served many artists in those five years. Artists of many backgrounds have come into the press to gain access to equipment, work on collaborative projects and attend workshops and events.
Collaborating with local literary and visual writers has been one of the many ways the Press has integrated into the creative fiber of Racine, WI and the surrounding area. the Press is honored to have been part of many local art activities and projects, including: get bEHIND the aRTS Studio Tour, ArtRoot, RAC ArtSpace Exhibitions, 16th Street Studios, Grassroots Open Mics, the BONK! Performance Series, and the Racine Public Library's Make Stuff Series.
Some of the collaborations the Press has spear headed have gone on to help other artists along their own paths as they work and grow in their own mediums. We have been honored to work with local youth in Pocket Renaissance. The collaborative broadside project, 8 x 8, 2012 has gone on to the permanent collections of UW-Milwaukee's Golda Meir Special Collection and the special collection of the Racine Public Library.
With five years under her belt, founder Samira Gdisis is in the project of writing a new strategic plan, creating new classes and developing new collaborations with local artists. Please keep your eye on the website for new and exciting changes and opportunities to come.
